Club Peace &
Plenty, Beach Inn and the Bonefish Lodge are pleased to send our
warmest greetings to our friends and guests and hope you will enjoy
the latest news from Exuma and the Peace & Plenty.
We
have just about finished the redecoration of the East Wing and I
am sure you will enjoy the new color scheme and other changes that
you will find in the rooms of the East Wing. In August and September
of 2003 we are planning on upgrading the middle wing of the Club
Peace & Plenty.
Our Club Peace
& Plenty Manager of a little less than 2 years, Jeff Smith has
of January 15, 2003 decided to resign. He has taken on the job of
overseeing the rebuilding of the Out Island Inn and when completed
will become General Manager of the new Out Island Inn complex. We
will miss his experience and professionalism in the hotel industry.
Since he will be located only 1 mile away, we will work together
to make Exuma the place to go on vacations or holidays.
Charlie Pflueger
will step in as temporary manager for several months until we find
a competent Manager to take over the management of Club Peace &
Plenty.
Do you remember
the Suttons, Tom and Lynn who were in charge of the dive operation
located at the dock at the Club Peace & Plenty? Well, they accepted
our offer to be Resident Managers of the Peace & Plenty Beach
Inn. So far they aredoing an excellent job in sprucing up the place
and trying to make our guests and staff happy with good service
and excellent food. They decided to open the Sponge Bar at the end
of the Beach Inn dock with new equipment and rebuilt the bar and
tables. Tom also built a woodworking shop on the property and he
now has a workplace where he can fix most anything. Tom also is
reestablishing a laundry on the property, so that we can give better
service for the rooms.
At the Club,
in part of August, the month of September and part of October, we
bought new equipment for the kitchen, put in new marble-set porcelain
tile in the dining room, lobby entry and the Yellow Dog Lounge.
There is also all new furniture in the lobby. Come see it, you’ll
like it.
Dora Lee is
still doing her thing on Stocking Island Beach Club. She is talking
about retirement, and we keep talking her out of it. The north and
south nature walks are still being improved. Dora Lee’s kitchen
has a new stove and we are considering enlarging and improving the
Men’s and Women’s washrooms this summer on Stocking
Island.
Terence, the
man in charge of improving our website, is now in the process of
translating our web pages into 4 European languages of German, French,
Italian and Spanish. This may help us receive guests from almost
all parts of the world.
Mady, from the
Ft. Lauderdale office, reports that Mrs. Langfitt from the Philadelphia
area telephoned her in early January to tell her what a great time
was had by her family during the
Christmas and New Year holidays. They took 6 rooms for their children
and grandchildren at the Beach Inn. They rented 2 boats and one
car for the 10 day vacation period and spent a great deal of time
at our Stocking Island Beach Club.
Although the
Season has been off to a slower start than usual, we remain optimistic
that it will be a very good one. We have noticed the return of our
boating community, who demonstrates time and again that Exuma is
still the preferred destination in the Bahamas. Recently we have
heard a rumor that Ritz Carlton has signed on a deal to commence
building a resort on Crab Cay to take place around September 2004.
Bonefish Lodge
update: Investor and part owner, Bob Hyde has added a salt water
lounging pool, with seating garden, rock waterfall and a flowering
pergola in a lush tropical setting. This new outdoor attraction
compliments the rustic restaurant under the direction of Chef Martin
Clarke, the master of seafood specialties, with cracked conch and
fresh conch salad among the island renowned presentations. To help
Martin with fresh conch, Alston Rolle constructed a “conch
kraal” stocked with dozens of live conch, instantly ready
to provide the freshest dining pleasure. Magnolia Morley, Lodge
Manager, advises that the guides are reporting an exceptional run
of bonefish from 8 to 11 pounds plus so far this winter. Whatever
the reason, let’s hope it continues.
The
Employee of the Issue is Renae Lawrence. Renae has been with the
company for nine years; the eighteenth of March will make it ten
years. She has no plans to go anywhere, simply because “I
like where I am, love what I do and plan to do it better!”
She started in the gift shop and has worked in every department
including Maintenance. Renae is married to Mervin Lawrence. The
couple has four beautiful children; Rionda 16, Travis 11, Mervin
Jr. 9 and Raneisha (baby girl) 4 years old. Her hobbies are traveling,
shopping, and meeting people and loves to “hang.” Motto
is: If you want it done and done right, do it yourself. Congratulations
Renae!
St. Andrew’s
Anglican Church celebrated its’ 200th Anniversary on Sunday,
the 26th of
January. Mady, from the Ft. Lauderdale office, and Eileen Newberry,
our decorator, attended the services to celebrate this significant
event. Assisting Clergy from all over the Bahamas who served as
Priest in charge of St. Andrew’s over the years, attended
the services as well. The Celebrant: The Most Rev’d Drexel
W. Gomez, B.A., C.M.G., Archbishop of the West Indies and Bishop
of the Bahamas, including the Turks and Caicos Islands, who hails
originally from the Berry Islands, delivered a timely and significant
sermon.
Al Gibson and
the St. Margaret’s Anglican Church Youth Choir performed a
rendition of “Touch Me Lord” from their recently produced
CD. The Choir of St. Andrews and the Choir of Christ-the-King Church
in Nassau performed as well. It’s remarkable to think that
this beautiful, historical church on the hill overlooking Elizabeth
Harbour was built 200 years ago.
We would like
to offer our sincerest condolences to Ms. Joyce Marshall, (Club
waitress) who’s sister Gloria passed away in Nassau recently.
We’ve
worked hard to put together an information sheet for guests and
locals alike, who are interested in planning a wedding, honeymoon
or any special occasion at one of our three hotels. Anyone interested
can receive our new brochure by contacting the Ft. Lauderdale office.
Kirk Haskell,
better known as Elvis Presley, along with his girlfriend Jeanine
(Priscilla Presley) performed around the pool one Sunday night at
the end of January. After the show, he kept the crowd partying with
Karaoke until closing. We are planning to run Karaoke at the Club
on occasional Sunday nights. Steve Ferguson, local bonefish guide
and disc jockey is going to run the show!
In honor of
the 50th Anniversary of the Family Island Regatta, we have included
a wonderful “Easy Chili con Carne” recipe on the reverse
side of this newsletter from the Regatta Committee.
From Chris Kettel,
member of the Exuma Education Resource Center ... Regular readers
of the newsletter will know of the involvement of the Peace and
Plenty and the Benjamin family with the Exuma Foundation and the
Exuma Education Resource Center. Mr. Benjamin recently announced
that he has gifted the Resource Center property at Hoopers Bay to
the Exuma Foundation. At their recent Annual General Meeting, the
President and Board of the Foundation expressed their gratitude
for the generosity and imagination of the Benjamin family in making
this contribution to the future of the island.
