SUMMER/FALL 2006 - VOLUME 28 - PDF Version

THE NEW YORK TIMES SAYS: "QUOTE"

"If you're staying at the Club Peace and Plenty Hotel in George Town, attend the manager's Friday night reception; if you're not staying there, CRASH IT."(There is a cocktail party Monday night, too!)

Abbott Combes, a travel writer, absolutely captured the true nature and aura of Peace & Plenty in an article published in the March 24th edition of the New York Times Travel Section. The article, entitled 36 Hours, Exuma, Bahamas, describe his adventures in a day and a night experiencing the authentic Exuma.

From the "Doctor of Libation" at the pool bar, to Doralee on Stocking Island, Mr. Combes met and enjoyed the best and brightest of the Peace & Plenty..

WE'RE BECOMING FAMOUS!!! While on location filming Pirates of the Caribbean II, JOHNNY DEPP himself, accepted the 2006 People's Choice Award LIVE sitting in front of the Regatta mural in the slave kitchen bar. Staff members, guests and locals watched the award show on television in the Yellow Dog Lounge while it was being broadcast from Los Angeles via satellite. Later, he greeted people in the dining room and lobby. A few lucky guests even got their picture taken with him. The movie opens in July 06. I'm sure the Exumian waters will outshine the stars.

Good News

The Winter Season was a huge success. As regularly as the swallows return to Capistrano, many of our long time friends (no longer just "guests") return to the Club Peace & Plenty in February and March each year to renew lifelong relationships, not only with each other, but with the hotel owners, management, staff and local people. Tested by time and mutual interests, these close friendships spill over from one year to the next and into geographically scattered homes throughout the rest of the year.

Needless to say, their return each year is highly valued and anticipated. This year, the group, (including Mady Eisenberg, from the Ft. Lauderdale office and her friend Ann Conroy, from Rhode Island), went on a day sail aboard the catamaran, Exuma Lady, all of whom were graciously invited by Captain Antonio Johnson, (who some of you may remember once worked for Exuma Scuba). Here's a shot of them before they sailed. We are happy to report no one went overboard and all returned intact to the Club just in time for afternoon cocktails.

Stan Benjamin and his faithful companion nurses, Irma and Marie spent about three weeks in Exuma. Mr. Benjamin seems to thrive seeing old friends and staff that have become like family over the years. He celebrated his 95th birthday in April and plans on being around for several more birthdays and many more trips to the island.

April brought the Annual National Family Island Regatta to George Town, and once again, the Club Peace & Plenty was at the center of all the activity. The races and other events are broadcast live on ZNS television in Nassau and we play a big part in the story. Not only do they broadcast from the Club, but this year, Renae Lawrence (Back Office Manager) and Annette McKenzie (Reservation
Manager) organized a fashion show around the pool, which was seen on TV sets throughout the country. Our beautiful Exumian girls modeled clothes from the Peace & Plenty Boutique, Androsia Fashions and showed off the official Regatta T-shirts in every way possible. The crowd went wild for the Bahamian beauties. We plan on making this an annual event as it was hugely successful. Thank you for all your hard work ladies!

Beach Inn News

While there is much good news to report on the Beach Inn, we must let you know of a potential tragedy that in turn became a miracle of sorts.

Managers Tom and Lynne Sutton and their dog, Gypsy were visiting their home in Lake Worth, Florida, shopping for the hotel, and visiting family. The morning they took off to fly back to Exuma in Tom's single engine plane, the Suttons and their dog never made it out of the airport when the engine sputtered and the plane went down. The "Mooney" was about 150 feet in the air when the engine gave out and they came down hard. Miraculously, they all survived the crash. Gypsy injured her paw, Tom & Lynne had more serious injuries. Thankfully, they are both doing well and are recovering at home in Florida close to family. We are sure that by the time you are reading this newsletter that they will be back on the island and at home at the Beach Inn. We are all so thankful that luck was on their side that day.

Shortly before the Suttons left for Florida, the ownership and management of Peace & Plenty made a decision to eliminate lunch and dinner at the Beach Inn and make it strictly a Bed & Breakfast. A lovely, extensive complimentary continental breakfast, including fruit and home baked muffins is now included in the room rate. The usual shuttle to the Peace & Plenty will be running to take guests to dinner at the Club. Other dining possibilities include the P&P Bonefish Lodge (which will be operating the new wood burning grill on the outside back deck), Palm Bay, Coconut Cove and the always fun local "fish fry."

As usual, Tom Sutton had been busy all season long with major improvements to both the Beach Inn and Stocking Island properties. Since last summer, Tom and Willie have been assisting the designers in building and installing an ecological wastewater treatment plant at the Beach Inn. This system, one of the first of its kind in the out islands of the Bahamas, will produce gallons upon gallons of clean water which will be used for such things as landscaping. This effort will continue to help save the environment for years to come.

(We are happy to report that both the Beach Inn and the Club are now both using solar water heating panels to heat most of the hot water used for the hotel, which help tremendously to conserve energy and produce plenty of hot water!)

In typical Sutton fashion, Tom & Lynne went from one project to the next. The hamburger shack on Stocking Island has long been in need of repair. We all know that Doralee can produce the best conchburgers and hamburgers in the world on her little stove, but we needed to give her more room, more air and more freezer space. She will have it all now. The improvements made were more practical than cosmetic. The big round table where people have been meeting people for years remains unchanged, and no one could possibly disturb the natural ambience that surrounds you in this cherished space, only make it better.

"Other P&P News"

The Management office which has been located in Ft. Lauderdale for many years has closed its doors, but the Management Team is still in full swing serving the hotels and our guests behind the scenes. Barry, Paul, Mady and Walter (Mongo) have relocated to Deerfield Beach and are also working from their respective homes. The internet and cell phones have made it extraordinarily easy to conduct business from just about any location. Their phone numbers and email addresses remain the same. ** A note from the owners ** Mady deserves a round of applause for the work she has done in putting together this issue of the newsletter. Thanks, Mady!

The Peace & Plenty Bonefish Lodge was proud to host The Redbone Celebrity Tournament's 2nd Annual Exuma Classic to Catch the Cure for Cystic Fibrosis in May 2006. Next years tournament promises to be even bigger.

This past May, the Lodge and Bob Hyde took part in the recording of a fishing show for ESPN television. Please monitor the Lodge's news letter for updates on when the show will air. www.ppbonefishlodge.net.

Barry Benjamin and his family have just returned from a trip to Madagascar. Their younger daughter Mary, an animal and nature enthusiast, has a particular fondness for lemurs, which are indigenous to Madagascar. They had a fabulous time. Their eldest, Emily, who is quite the tennis player, is anxious to take off for tennis camp in North Carolina for three weeks in July. This will be her second summer attending. David Benjamin has also been traveling to Europe, visiting friends and taking seminars that will continue to enhance his ability to create a sustainable Peace and Plenty property.

Club Manager, Neville Lee Choy, assisted by his able staff, hosted a cocktail party for the Miami Dolphin's Cheerleaders who were in Exuma shooting a new calendar. Neville and Lermon ("Doc") were both lucky enough to have their pictures taken surrounded by the lovely girls.

Charlie Pfleuger and his family are going on an Alaskan cruise this summer on the Holland American Line for eleven days and then on to Colorado for his grand-daughter's wedding. We'll see him back in Exuma this fall.

Walt Stewart (Mongo), pilot and marketing rep for P&P will be attending "Airventure 2006" in July in Oshkosh, Wisconsin as part of the Out Island Promotion Board group. This is the biggest air show in the country and the most well attended. They expect crowds of up to 700,000 passing through. Peace & Plenty has a special promotion "Pilots of the Caribbean" for any flyers attending the show, so if you're in the neighborhood...

Tidbits

Mr. Bob Nesbitt (long time guest and friend) hosted his Seventh Annual Family Reunion in June. Twentythree family members literally took over the Club for a week. This year is particularly special, as four members of the group were from New Orleans and had to relocate to Alabama. Mr. Nesbitt thought it would be a good idea to hold a special party to celebrate their good fortune in being able to be together.

The downtown George Town Bridge over the outlet to Victoria Pond is under construction. The Ministry of Works hopes to have the new construction completed in July. Even though the construction has been an inconvenience, its reinforcement and expansion was much needed. Locals as well as visitors have had to walk "round the pond" to get to the grocery store or to Eddie's Edgewater. Although it's a hike, I'm sure everyone enjoyed the exercise and scenery!

Remember you can always read the current newsletter (and past issues) on our website, www.peaceandplenty. com. If you would like to be notified of any new P&P specials by email, please send your email address to Mady at the Management Office at pnpmady@yahoo.com to be put on our mailing list.

Don't forget, the summer is a wonderful time to visit Exuma and the Peace & Plenty. The water temperature is ideal and the seas are calm enough for excellent boating, diving and snorkeling. The weather is no hotter than anywhere else and there is usually a lovely sea breeze.

This summer, The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism is sponsoring a Junkanoo Summer Festival at the Fish Fry, Saturdays only, from mid June until August 12th. The fun begins at noon and runs until eleven pm. Along with the Junkanoo groups, there will be sunfish sailing, local bands, onion peeling contests and lots more fun. Come visit us in the "off-season" and make it your own.

Trivialities

Did you know: Chewing gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying and celery has negative calories? It takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with. PLEASE

NOTE: As of January 1, 2007,
a Passport will be REQUIRED to enter the Bahamas.
